Radio Scintillation by the Martian Turbulent Ionosphere Andatmosphere-simulation Results

چکیده
Numerical simulations of scintillation measurements within the NetLander Geodesy and Ionosphere Experiment (NEIGE) are presented. The multiple phase screen scintillation model is used, allowing for vertical variations of the background ionosphere (atmosphere) parameters. It is shown that ionospheric scintillation at 400 MHz is weak due to a small electron concentration and ionosphere thickness. Atmospheric S-band scintillation is very weak. For studies of the atmospheric turbulence X-band will be more useful. We also show that the reconstruction procedure based on either the phase screen model or moments of the wave field yields useful information about the irregular structure of the medium.

Simulating Ionosphere Scintillation Effects. Potential Applications for Future Earth Observation Missions
In real soundings of the Earth’s atmosphere, it has been found that the phase and amplitude of the signal received undergo strong oscillations at altitudes above the neutral atmosphere and below the Elayer of the ionosphere. This ionospheric scintillation effect is a consequence of multipath propagation resulting from inhomogeneities in the refractivity field of the ionosphere. Ionospheric scin...
متن کاملA review on the numerical simulation of equatorial plasma bubbles toward scintillation evaluation and forecasting
Equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) have been a longstanding and increasingly important subject because they cause severe scintillations in radio waves from Global Navigation Satellite System satellites. The phenomenon was found in the 1930s as irregular ionosonde observations and was termed equatorial spread F (ESF). ESF is interpreted as plasma density irregularities associated with EPBs that ha...
متن کاملIonospheric Irregularities, Scintillation and Its Effect on Systems
An essential component of the ionosphere is a small-scale electron density structure that causes scintillation of radio waves on transionospheric links. We briefly review the morphology of irregularities and physical mechanisms of their formation. Results of the scintillation theory relating statistical characteristics of irregularities and scintillation are also outlined. Examples of the scint...
متن کاملScintillation noise power spectrum and its impact on high-redshift 21-cm observations
Visibility scintillation resulting from wave propagation through the turbulent ionosphere can be an important source of noise at low radio frequencies (ν 200MHz). Many low-frequency experiments are underway to detect the power spectrum of brightness temperature fluctuations of the neutral-hydrogen 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR: 12 z 7, 100 ν 175 MHz). In this paper, we derive...
متن کاملMultiple phase screen modeling of ionospheric scintillation along radio occultation raypaths
[1] We present the Radio Occultation Scintillation Simulator (ROSS), which uses the multiple phase screen method (MPS) to simulate the forward scatter of radio waves by irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere during radio occultation experiments. ROSS simulates propagation through equatorial plasma bubbles which are modeled as homogeneous electron density fluctuations modulated by a Chapman...
